New Feature - Radial Cell Selector
Hexakai now has a new, better way to set a cell, color a cell, add pencil markings: radial input. Tap or click a cell and a ring of choices appears around it, with a compact bar on top to switch between Value, Pencil, and Color. You stay on the board instead of jumping into a centered dialog, and you can see the cell you picked the whole time.
Radial is on by default. If you prefer the original pop-up, you can switch back to Modal in settings.
How It Works
When you tap a cell, two things appear:
- The mode bar, above the cell, with Value, Pencil, and Color, plus a small × to close
- The ring, around the cell, showing the choices for whatever mode you are in
The rest of the board dims slightly so the ring is easy to see, and the cell you tapped keeps its hover highlight in the center of the ring.
Value sets the cell's number (or letter, emoji, and so on, depending on your hex cell display). Pencil toggles notes on the cell; you can also select all notes or clear them. Color sets a highlight color, or clears it. Changes apply as soon as you tap them, so you can flip from value to pencil to color without closing anything.
When you're done, tap outside the ring, or press ×, or press Escape. Right-click or long-press still works: it opens the same ring, starting in Color mode.
Radial or Modal
Open settings (the gear on the account page, or from the app header) and look for Cell Input:
- Radial — the new ring around the cell. This is the default.
- Modal — the original centered dialog.
If you keep Modal, Hex Menu still applies: Separate uses left-click for values and right-click / long-press for color and pencil, and Unified puts all three in one dialog.
Give it a try on your next puzzle, and switch back anytime if it is not for you.
Thank You to the Community
Many of you have asked for this feature, both on the app stores and via the contact form. Throughout Hexakai's lifetime, I've received multiple critiques and feedback requests, many of which I experimented with and found to be quite useful, including this new radial input. Thank you all for your interest and please feel free to share more feedback and ideas as they come to you.
